Excellent overview of the region that’s likely the next target of Putin’s murderous imperialism - and of nations that offer some inspiration and hope for confronting it. Well written and widely sourced, it’s sympathetic to the cause but presents the nuances and doubts fairly. #books

What I'm trying to do with this Daily Brief is write about human rights in ways that we can all understand.

It's not intended for experts and activists (although, many of them have told me they like it, too).

Have a look at recent editions and tell me what you think:

“When confronted by such horrors [today], silence is unacceptable. Silence is complicity. To remain silent is to suggest nothing has been learned from the past.”

It’s right to remember the dead of 1939-45. But keep the anger about current wars too

Around the globe, conflict is spreading – but it’s too often going ignored. Are we simply overwhelmed by the scale of it, asks Guardian foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall

The top story? Seriously, who cares?
Good news: Europe made more electricity from solar than coal in 2024, and wind now tops gas.

‘Rising star’: EU made more electricity from solar than coal in 2024

Report reveals solar power generated 11% of bloc’s electricity, surpassing coal at 10%

Another breakfast in a hospital in #Hungary: a roll with some low-grade liver paste. Served (thrown) onto patient’s stomach (patient was lying down). Apparently they ran out of paper plates as it came on a paper towel.

@andrewstroehlein It’s not clear from the graph, did wind pass gas in 2024 or 2023? That seems like a bigger story, given that Europe has been shifting from coal to gas for the last 40 years. The combined wind + solar exceeding gas + coal is also nice to see.
@andrewstroehlein Once Merz builds his 50 gas-fired power stations ...

I wish more countries were like France and used reprocessed nuclear fuel. We have enough spent nuclear fuel to meet Earth's entire electrical needs for the next century.

@andrewstroehlein finally some good fucking news

@andrewstroehlein That graph may be the most optimistic overview of the situation I' ever seen considering most fossile energy are on decline and renewable are on the rise.

But it kinda contradict most of what I heard about fossil energy use being on constant rise despite renewable energy. Does it means that this kind of tendancy is EU-only and the rest of the world is going elswhere ?

(also I'm pretty sur EU is shitting the stats by importing the stuff they don't want to produce)

@andrewstroehlein I am just concerned by 3 things: 1) 90% of eu solar panels were made and imported from China (source: electifact.eu) 2) what is the environmental impact of the manufacturing and 3) how long will they last and how/when will we need to update them?

@simone_z @andrewstroehlein
i feel like im making a mistake taking this in good faith, but here goes:
1: so is everything else? europe isnt really known to be the largest manufacturing hub on the planet. this feels like just sinophobia to me.
2/3: first result from searching 'environmental impact of photovoltaic manufacturing': https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2020.143528

addendum: not all solar generation is photovoltaic; it's not in europe, but the SEGS facility is a great example of how it's possible to address the very quick electric demand changes on the grid using solar generation.

@andrewstroehlein
Great news! Wonder how the UK stacks up.

@Maeve_Lyn @andrewstroehlein Pretty similarly, tbh. Wind beat Gas for the first time last year, and we've barely used coal since the turn of the millennium.

(2025 looks a bit rough in the graph because it's still January)

Hydro, Wind and Solar growing.

Hydro needs massive study and redesign. Weather will never be the normal watervcyckecagain.

Continental dehydration, drought is growing, will grow, is a crisis. Not just for hydro but the widespread death of forests.

Build solar and wind as fast as China orvwe don't make it.

@andrewstroehlein

A fossil fuel phase out is necessary.

It will end some of the funding for far right political parties.

@andrewstroehlein the apparent reason for tRump trying to kill wind power in US - so that his 'friends' wouldn't become any less uberwealthy.
