Today I have officially retired from the practice of law. I had a good and satisfying run with great colleagues, clients, and issues. I had the amazing feeling of doing public-interest law in law-firm settings. I am grateful to so many who taught me, supported me, worked with me, or trusted me along the way.
At the Jefferson Memorial today and relevant to arguments this morning in the DC Circuit: “Establish the law for educating the common people.” Then give them the law to learn, unfettered and free. It is repugnant to allow organizations to claim copyright monopoly in the laws they persuaded government to adopt, so as to exercise a veto power or to facilitate the sale of access to the law.
The Greek “Clean Monday” (the beginning of Orthodox Lent) was today, and I guess it’s a marker of spring’s arrival. Lots of families about today, looking happy, with meals out and kite flying. The greek word for “kite” is χαρταετός — “paper eagle.” I think this one was plastic, but it was very impressive:
