World Press Photo communications director. But I'm here in a personal capacity.

I've seen so much talk about Gemini lately, but I think there is a limitation to a general LLM's that's being overlooked in that discussion.

I asked chatGPT for "a picture of a typical dutch person", it replied with, "Creating an image of a "typical Dutch person" involves navigating through cultural stereotypes, which can be sensitive and may not accurately represent the diverse population of any country" before giving me this gem...

Every now and then I check on xkcd and end up thinking, "yep, that's where we are now".

This is a ridiculous make up job.

And yes, it is a real photo. Can find it at the bottom here... https://www.npr.org/2023/11/01/1209721171/trump-family-take-witness-stand-new-york-civil-fraud-trial

This photo gets to me. I would do anything for my children. But we all have physical limits. A point where we just collapse no matter how much will we have to go on.

I hope Luis Miguel and Melissa (pictured) are safe and well.

I am seeing quite a few weird articles trashing Europe. Just take this graph as an example.

For the Wall Stree Journal, it is a very bad sign for Europeans. So much less consumer spending - the horror!

The way I see it, it could be a bad or a good sign. And as the article itself says, Europeans prefer leisure time to extra income. Live more, spend less - that's a good thing if you ask me. But it doesn't fit the WSJ narrative.

Europeans Are Becoming Poorer. ‘Yes, We’re All Worse Off.’

An aging population that values its free time set the stage for economic stagnation. Then came Covid-19 and Russia’s war in Ukraine.

It's a bit windy in The Netherlands right now.

Happy 4th of July! 🎆

Freedom means everyone can choose how to celebrate today (or not). But you don't get to force other people to celebrate it like you do, tell them how they should dress, who they should be, or what choices they make about their own bodies. #USA

That said, I hope all my fellow Americans are having a good time today, one way or another.

I think Trump is actually being pretty well treated by the media. Checking Google News for "Trump arrested", most top results say he pled not guilty in right in the headline. As a defendant, that's a very good result.

I'd like to share the Photo of the Year chosen by an independent jury from 60,000+ entries.

It documents the aftermath of an attack by Russia on a maternity hospital in Maripoul, Ukraine. I think it is important that we do not forget this woman.

Mariupol Maternity Hospital Airstrike | World Press Photo

Iryna Kalinina (32), an injured pregnant woman, is carried from a maternity hospital that was damaged during a Russian airstrike in Mariupol, Ukraine. Her baby, named Miron (after the word for ‘peace’) was stillborn, and half an hour later Iryna died as well.
