"Low-caliber haiku written by a Japanese man living in Los Angeles (why'd they even hire him?)"

The haiku:

"No matter the day / Here by my side / there is tea"

- Ohtani Shohei, 31, Los Angeles, CA

I finished 斜め屋敷の犯罪 by Soji Shimada (島田荘司), from the Kiyoshi Mitarai series. It was a really great locked-room mystery in a mansion with a fascinating architecture.

I do prefer murder stories that rely on psychology and motive rather than puzzles and locked-room mysteries, but I enjoyed this one very much. Bonus point for the commentary by Yukito Ayatsuji!

Hello! I've been on various Mastodon instances in the past, but since I've just moved to another, I guess it's time for a new #introduction to let everyone know what I'm about.

I'm a Japanese to English translator based in Tokyo and lover of books. I mostly post about life in Japan, stuff I'm reading, and these days, coming to terms with chronic illness and disability. If that's something you're interesting in, feel free to follow! I'm sure we can get along :)

In #JapaneseFolklore there is a supernatural #yokai phenomenon known as mayoibune. During the Obon holiday (which starts today) spirits are believed to return from the dead to visit the living. Mayoibune are the haunting ghosts of sailors that have drowned at sea and return on the northwesterly winds. Seeing mayoibune can result in terrible visions and even death once sailors return to shore. More info and art here:

In #JapaneseFolklore Mekurabe is a strange #yokai that is actually many skulls grouped together to take the form of a giant skull. It appears at night and challenges people to staring contests. Reports indicate that this strange phenomenon begins with skulls rolling around before forming the giant skull, which then begins staring at you. If it loses the contest it will crumble and disappear but if it wins...actually no-one knows what happens if it wins.
