"Why did you come to this time? To warn us?"

The time traveler laughed. "Why would anyone listen to me?"

"You're from our future-"

"No, I'm from a different timeline, a different future. I'm a refugee."

"To here? Now?"

"It looks fucked right now, but this is the timeline that pulls through."

@garpu It was 2020. Gritty memes.
@dandrezner Cancelled my subscription after hearing about it. Won’t damage Bezos in any way, and the only people getting hurt are going to be the reporters and editorial staff who hate this, but I can’t see any other option. Just like the Teamsters non-endorsement, it’s actually an endorsement of Trump.
I wrote patriotically today. You're welcome, America! https://danieldrezner.substack.com/p/a-republic-if-you-can-keep-it
"A Republic If You Can Keep It"

Some Independence Day thoughts about some very un-American ideas.

@garpu yes
Is it just me, or does “vibrant and passionate community” sound like code for “pen filled with rabid dogs” most of the time?
@thelinuxEXP There’s a distinction to be made between ads. There’s the ads that people (like you) get in direct sponsorship, because they’re in the video/podcast/etc, and there’s the “ad tech” ads stapled on to websites, videos, or podcasts by clever machines. I think the latter is what’s under actual threat. The former will only grow, because people like you are incentivized to make ads that don’t drive away their viewers. I pay for YT Premium, but I still see your ads.
So apparently Dwarf Fortress people are not entirely unlike, possibly even often the same, assholes who responded to every Linux question in 2005 with “shut up until you’ve read all the man pages”
@kcoxdc That is an extremely good question. And part of a very under explored set of question about how@mich of the work IT systems in general do that actually needs to get done, even before AI. How much work is actually saved.
