incredible paper by Lukas Althoff and Hugo Reichardt on the long-run economic consequences of slavery and Jim Crow
among other things it shows Black families freed in states with more oppressive Jim Crow regimes attained significantly fewer years of education by 1940 (with no effect for White families)

Woot 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
@susanathey has arrived!
Slave-owners demanded deference & punished dissent.
Seeing this, white infants presumed total authority over enslaved people
Slavery was also instilled through coercive control & terror.
If one slave owner was too lax that might lessen fear in the wider community. It would have *negative externalities*.
So, legislators not only allowed slave owners to beat & kill, they actually mandated punishment.
If a slave ran away in SC, the owner was 'required' to whip them publicly, with 40 lashes.
When we migrate to a new country, we do have to think about those who were already living there.
