@RevealingLight Wow. And is that a person wrapped in white cloth on the left?

There's misinformation floating around about Mastodon. Clarifying things:

1. Mastodon doesn't rely on volunteers. It's a registered non-profit that employs people. Kind of like how Wikipedia and Mozilla are non-profits that employs people.
2. Many instances are run by volunteers but not all.
3. Mastodon is just one part of the Fediverse. Benefits of decentralization is that anyone can build on open protocols.
4. Mastodon is big, but Flickr and Tumbler are bigger -- they're joining the Fediverse

While following a lot of people can populate your Home feed significantly, sometimes people (like me) end up boosting a lot and that can unexpectedly hinder your own experience.

So if you like someone's specific posts and don't want to follow their boosts, you can go to their profile under the [...] button, and select the "Hide boosts from account" button.

There is no algorithm on Mastodon. You have ownership and control over every filtering decision instead of some robot.

#TwitterMigration

This is one of my favorite pictures. It feels like it was taken yesterday… but it was taken in a Paris public garden nearly a hundred years ago. Everything feels modern: the composition, the casualness, the daring clothes, haircuts, and accessories.

The colors are original: this is an #autochrome, using the first process for color #photography invented by the Lumière brothers in 1903.

The women are unknown, but I can't help wondering how they fared a few years later in nazi-occupied Paris.

I am just dying right now! ☠️

HOW was this done last year- and I missed it? 😳 #StarTrek #AllIWantForChristmasIsQ #Christmas 🎄

@danhannigan Thought I was the only one!

I was googling around- and look what I found! This is an actual 4th grader's California mission diorama and report.

Kids are awesome.

Oh wow, that's great to hear! Thanks for sharing this update

I also grew up in California, and I remember a fourth-grade project where we were to recreate dioramas of the missions with sugar cubes.

Only last year did I find out the horrible things that happened in those missions. That the school system decided to focus on the benefits of the mission system of all things is dumbfounding. We were literally sugarcoating cultural genocide.

yes, exactly. I asked my (85% Mexican American) students a couple of weeks ago how many of them had learned that the Maya “disappeared” and nearly all of them raised their hands.
