"When I question whether AI can ever be ethical or feminist (...) it doesn’t come from cynicism for the sake of it, but from years of watching patterns repeat. The promises to do better, the carefully crafted language of responsibility, the performance of listening, none of it has meaningfully shifted how these systems are built or who they serve."
New piece by Hija Kamran, part of the series "Don't ask AI, ask a peer," an initiative by APC, GenderIT and Global Voices.

A civilization did die last night, never to return.
Perhaps it used to be a good idea. Perhaps we should mourn its deadly, destructive demise.
Yet last night we saw a people flood their city's streets—not seeking martyrdom, but refusing to let the very idea of civilization perish.
Sometimes blood triumphs over the sword. There are no guarantees, only struggle.
Someday we'll tell the unheroic stories of those who chose life and living against the pull of death and profit.

They actually hate us for a kind of freedom that never made sense to them. Much of it lived despite our home grown torturers because the city nurtured it.
Urbicide is a crime against humanity.
In Pink Floyd's High Hopes there is the image of a ragged band following in their footsteps.
The specter of who they were always a few steps behind.
I feel I'm being chased, pushed to move faster, to run. I look behind and it is only my specter chasing me.

Khaled’s OCD makes him avoid smudging touchscreens, so I set out to build an air synth mode. This is an early prototype, but it’s already fun to play with.
