Job Description Summary: UCAR is excited to announce the job opening for the CPAESS Educational Designer I role supporting the Water Mission Area (WMA) in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) . This position is responsible for designing and developing inclusive learning materials for Water Resources Mission Area staff and conducting training. CPAESS serves the Earth System Science community in three distinct areas of service. We partner with federal agencies and businesses to hire critical scientific staff enabling a more robust workforce. Through our scientific programs we seek to edify new research with our postdoctoral programs, our visiting scientist and internship programs, along with our interagency support programs. We also help build the Earth system science community by convening and managing summer schools and institutes, conferences, and advisory committees. What You Will Do Educational Content Design, Development, and Delivery Collaborate with USGS staff, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and vendors to design, develop, and archive accessible and inclusive training (technical and non-technical) for diverse audiences in the USGS Water Resources Mission Area workforce. Assess and revise existing instructional materials for the USGS Water Resources Mission Area through an iterative design process. Serve as a resource for SMEs and instructors on best practices for inclusive learning. Project Management and Leadership Work with the Design Team and assist with coordinating communication between project leaders and WD&T on project needs, status, and obstacles. Serve as a project leader for small projects under the guidance of the lead Educational Designer. This includes coordinating the work of other team members and setting project tasks and milestones. Participate in team discussions and contribute to decision-making, workflows, and processes. Provide input on reports and may give presentations as appropriate. Who We'd Love To Join Our Team Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria: Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in a relevant academic discipline (education, instructional design, learning experience design, educational psychology, graphic/multimedia design, or STEM field); 3 years of relevant experience; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Desired, but not required: Degree or significant coursework in a scientific discipline. Training experience in a federal environment. Experience working directly with subject matter experts in developing educational or training materials, courses, programs, e-learning, or other relevant learning products. Experience with e-learning authoring tools, media/graphic design, LMS/LCMS. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated ability in applying design models and theories for working professionals of diverse backgrounds including instructional design theories, multimedia theories of learning, and visual design principles, etc. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse workforce. Demonstrated ability to work directly with subject matter experts. Demonstrated skill in evaluating, remediating, and building instructional materials for digital accessibility and inclusivity. Skill in developing performance objectives and assessments to evaluate learning and performance outcomes. Ability to adjust communication style and/or format to connect with a particular audience and context. Knowledge of ethical and inclusive design practices based on diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in STEM. Demonstrated skill in developing storyboards and/or lesson plans based on a need analysis. Knowledge of visual aesthetics in creating and editing instructional media and assets. Strong prioritization and organizational skills, and flexibility to accommodate changing demands. Willingness and ability to travel - up to 2-3 domestic trips per year. Desired, but not required: Technical knowledge of water science (hydrology, groundwater, meteorology, ecohydrology, etc.). Experience in designing and developing instructional materials for STEM fields. Experience in designing 508 compliant instructional materials. Skill in applying qualitative and quantitative methods for assessment and improvement of program effectiveness. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, graphic and multimedia design software, and other technologies for creating and facilitating learning materials.
