It’s been so shocking to me that when I’ve pulled people up on using these terms they’ve had no idea that they have these histories. That’s how much Bla(c)k queer culture and First Nations culture has been erased. You don’t even know you’re appropriating it! I had one friend say “I just thought ‘slay’ was a queer term’ and my heart sank.
It’s hard to change language, that’s understandable, to help begin this - here is a list of alternatives to appropriate be language: https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/1Ioy3CDX_iR75DNJwvz7ftq51EXAvZ99C51HP1V_zPOY/mobilebasic#h.4gqqecxnmvfu (shout out to Emery for sharing this resource with me)
Thank you for coming to my TED talk/Blak rant.
It’s not my job to educate you but someone’s gotta do it and I don’t see anyone else stepping up so here we are.
I’m currently unemployed and have lost my student allowance due to needing to take time off due to illness. I’ve been in and out of hospital from February - October this year and I’m still recovering so if you’d like to compensate me for this labour (no expectation of course) my PayPal is https://www.paypal.me/HMoon94
