December 2023
Some of the guitars we worked on in December 2023. Although we had the privilege of working with many superb instruments, I think my favourites were the Tokai Flying V and the special edition Wolverine Les Paul. Gibson Les Paul Standard A Les Paul which suffered smoke damage in a house fire. I re-fretted with Jescar 55090 nickel wire, the same dimensions used by Gibson.
The oil can guitar build
Custom build for a customer who brought in a vintage Castrol oil can and a Gibson style neck. A wooden frame of ash and sapele was made to match the internal dimensions of the can, weight relief ‘added’ and hardware mountings drilled and routed. Working with sheet metal is not something I’m used to. Unlike wood, filing it into shape makes a very unpleasant sound 😆 The cap of the can is the volume control 😉👍🏻 it is tuned to open D major with a…

D’Addario XS strings
For my money, these are coated strings that are finally worth investing in. Dispersion tin plated high carbon steel plain strings and wound strings coated with a polymer give excellent strength and corrosion resistance. They also have a slightly smoother feel, which I dig but some may not. The XS strings have been getting really popular in the workshop lately, I have them on several of my electric guitars now and I think they’re epic.
