@davidallengreen eh, as someone who was here then I'd say that it was partly guns but also partly religion - there are a lot of fringe Christian groups here - so it was easy for a very loud chunk of the right to see a government vs "us" situation and the federal incompetence in actions and messaging just added fuel to the flames. Today those same people are ok with government vs "them" and for the rest of us the daily Trump outrage machine generates so much noise that it can be hard to focus on the goon squad horrors.

@briankrebs Police voluntarily asking you to press charges indicates they think it is a pretty easy win, I would agree because you want to encourage them taking action. The possibility of getting a story out of it is just a bonus.
