Hey Mastodon folks. If you are interested in joining a conversation in June around indie web and education technology, then you should come to our conference. This would be the perfect place to talk about Mastodon and education. Learn more: http://domains.reclaimhosting.com/
Last, the social nature of Twitter itself has a steeper learning curve than is often acknowledged. Adding a technical barrier on top of that? Why? That's also to say I'm still here because I'm curious and intrigued by the conversation. But I will likely not be "tweet"ing here. Also all of my opinions are subject to change at any moment.
Next, and I don't know enough to speak as to why this happens, open source tends to be dreadfully inaccessible to the common user. If you can't build a way for someone to install something through a GUI, I don't even want to talk about it having the potential to be "federated." In this sense, open source inevitably truly serves the developer community and that really bothers me.
Alright, so some brief thoughts on Mastodon. There is a common misnomer that open source = better. Anything that's open source still needs a funding model because it's made by humans and humans need a living wage. The quickest way to support open source is to fund it. If you don't fund it, don't get mad when the creator decides to take a living wage over their pet project. It happens all. the. time.
