The parents of The Kid's dance friends are so different than the parents of her school friends.
The school parents smile at me politely and otherwise ignore me, and when I say something they get kind of wide-eyed, like the sofa just spoke up.
The dance parents chat with each other, and with me, and sort of casually accept my presence. They may very well find me odd, but if so they don't reject me for it.
Sometimes people are OK.
One of the things that most annoys me about computing circa 2017 - which has kinda always been true but I hoped it would get better, and it hasn't - is that we have a serious lack of truly fundamental, correct concepts.
Information is almost literal thought-stuff. Costs a bit of energy, space, time, yes, but compared to bricks, it's like magic super-Lego. Almost anything we can imagine, we can create.
But we've created a vast tangled web we can't really understand. Didn't mean to. Just did.
And you know, I don't mind *irreducible* complexity. I don't mind complexity that comes from sheer size, from people, from the various problem domains we're mapping and trying to solve. That complexity was there before we came and if it's there when we leave, well we didn't make things *worse*.
What I mind is complexity that's purely *caused* by software, that doesn't need to be there. That's a mess that WE made. We took something moderately complex and we made it far worse. It's a failure.
You know what would be *really* awesome? Instead of seeing these, 'you'd also like' or 'other users installed' messages, ones that say, 'other apps with proven encryption' or 'doesn't spy on you' or some sort of user trust level.
Instead of โญโญโญโญโญ, โ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธ or ๐๐๐๐๐
