Superannuated, semi-retired mom in the wilds of NW Louisiana. Like my news real -- save the "alternative facts" for op-eds and fiction!

Yesterday, Freedom Caucus Republicans sent a letter to Pete Buttigieg at the Dept of Transportation demanding National Transportation Safety Board documents related to the train disaster in East Palestine.

Buttigieg responded with shock because
NTSB is an independent body, for good reason, and not even part of his Department.

Republicans don’t even know what they’re doing.

Why aren’t Republicans out in front of the idea that we need to build a modern electrical grid which supplies people and our businesses energy in a sophisticated and superior way, increasing American competitiveness in the 21st-century and overall helping everyone’s health?

Is there one single forward-looking idea anywhere to be found in today’s Republican Party? Newsflash, tax cuts for billionaires ain’t it. Standing in the middle of the tracks with your arms folded while the freight train known as the future obliterates you is not a genius political strategy in the long run.

But then, fully investing in developing anything that would help anyone outside their high-level donors is beyond Republicans at this time.

This year, a 30-second Super Bowl ad costs $7 million.

The average K-12 public school lunch debt is about $22,600.

To Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis' point, the cost of that Jesus ad could pay off the lunch debt of 310 schools.

As Christians, we need to walk the walk. This ad isn't walking.

To Republicans who use “invasion” language about immigrants: Stop - Your rhetoric gets people killed.

The gunman who just pled guilty to killing 23 “Hispanic invaders” in El Paso was inspired by the GOP’s invasion rhetoric.

I bet you’ve heard of Galileo & Hubble, but what about Henrietta Swan Leavitt?

Leavitt changed astronomy. She figured out new ways to measure a star’s distance from Earth & her work helped determine the universe is expanding.

Her boss, Edward Pickering, published her findings UNDER HIS NAME. Later, Shapley used her findings to determine distances around the Milky Way w/o credit.

Leavitt’s work is still used today. Next time you hear about famous men in #science share her story. #HistoryRemix

Over all the torrent of news these days is a fundamental struggle about the nature of human government. Is democracy still a viable form of government, or is it better for a country to have a strongman in charge? Democracy stands on the principle of equality for all people, and those who are turning away from democracy, including the right wing in the United States, object to that equality. They worry that equal rights for women and minorities—especially LGBTQ people—will undermine traditional religion and traditional power structures. They believe democracy saps the morals of a country and are eager for a strong leader who will use the power of the government to reinforce their worldview.

Kudos to the New York Public Library (#NYPL) for mining this vein of gold beneath our feet.

"NYPL has been reviewing the US #Copyright Office’s official…records for [books] whose copyrights haven’t been renewed…The books in question were published between 1923 & 1964, before changes to US copyright law removed the requirement for rights holders to renew their copyrights…Around 65 -75% of rights holders opted not to renew their copyrights."

Librarians Are Finding Thousands Of Books No Longer Protected By Copyright Law

Up to 75 percent of books published before 1964 may now be in the public domain, according to researchers at the New York Public Library.

The CEO-to-worker pay gap at America’s largest public companies is now 399-to-1.

In 1965, the ratio was 20-to-1.

Trickle-down economics was always a sham.
