VividConfusion from the dead bird site. Figuring it out on this site and hoping it doesn't go extinct.

He is closely related to the Lady Mondegreen, Small God of Misheard Lyrics, and to Beep E. Em, Small God of Patter Songs, but close relations are not identical by nature. He loves them dearly, but he has his own song to sing.

Well, hum.

Mostly.

He can’t always carry a tune, but he gets his point across most of the time, and when he doesn’t, he can fake it. Especially if you’re willing to hum a few bars first.

Hummel is with us all from...

4) Another benefit to the BBC of being a private instance is that they can apply style rules across all the accounts conforming to their general standards.

5) And, of course, a huge #PrivateInstance benefit is that it automatically verifies all content is from the BBC.

Congratulations to the BBC for a well thought out and beautifully executed entry into the Fediverse. Welcome!

2) Because it is a #PrivateInstance they do not have to perform the difficult job of vetting and monitoring users. This problem is left to public instances which have the resources to do the job.

3) Another #PrivateInstance benefit is that the #LocalTimeline (https://social.bbc/public/local) and #FederatedTimeline (https://social.bbc/public) become chronological content feeds under their control.

The BBC's implementation of this groundbreaking instance should serve as a model to other organizations on how to field their own instances:

1) The first thing to notice is that it is not open to the public. If you try to create an account, they politely say that "it's a place for us to publish in the Fediverse," and encourage users to make an account on any other server and follow them.

They are rare among the small gods in that they have believers among all sighted creatures, large and small, clever and less than clever, and they count their greatest worshippers, not among the humans, but in the depths of the ocean, among the simple, steadfast mantis shrimp. The mantis shrimp has four times as many visual receptors as a human. They can see colors mankind cannot even dream of, for we lack the minds to conceive of what we can never see.

“The principles of the Fediverse, with an emphasis on local control, quality content, and social value, are far more aligned with our public purposes than those of avowedly commercial networks like Threads or Twitter.”

BBC launches an ‘experimental’ Mastodon server

The BBC has launched an “experimental” server on the decentralized Twitter alternative Mastodon. The outlet says it will run the server for six months to determine whether it’s feasible.

”I was part of that cycle,” says former IDF soldier Avner Gvaryahu on the recent Jenin raid. “I can’t stop thinking about the Palestinians that I woke up in the middle of the night – that I frightened to death.” #Velshi https://www.msnbc.com/ali-velshi/watch/former-israeli-soldier-says-israel-is-making-everyone-less-safe-187251269861
Former Israeli soldier says Israel is making everyone less safe

Israeli forces recently concluded a two-day raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, carrying out airstrikes and sending in roughly 1,000 troops, marking the most substantial incursion into the West Bank in two decades. Israel's government says it was conducting a counter-terrorism operation, but observers say that it’s deliberately intensifying an already exceedingly violent year. Former Israeli soldier Avner Gvaryahu tells Ali Velshi that the operation in Jenin is based on a “distorted concept of security” and a zero sum game. “[It’s] based on the assumption that in order for the Israeli citizens living in the occupied West Bank illegally under international law to feel secure, basically Palestinians have to feel insecure.”

In the 1930s, it wasn’t until the dust bowl literally descended on Washington that Congress took serious action. Today, it’s heatwaves, wildfire smoke, and extreme weather events. The climate crisis is here, and we need to take action. #velshi https://www.msnbc.com/ali-velshi/watch/velshi-the-climate-crisis-is-here-187276357819
Velshi: The Climate Crisis is Here.

So far this summer, wildfire smoke has choked cities across the country week after week. Multiple heatwaves are gripping massive swaths of the nation, with no end in sight. The global temperature record broke at least three times in a row last week, and this next week may be even hotter. Models from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimate that 20% of Americans in the contiguous U.S. will experience dangerous temperatures this week. We are now experiencing some of the impacts of climate change - and it’s not going to stop until we curb emissions. So now, it’s imperative that at the local, state, and federal level, we learn how to protect ourselves.

There was a time when food delivery couriers were considered essential in NYC. Through lockdowns & extreme weather events, your food still arrives at your door. These workers are not being paid fairly and it's high time they receive a livable wage. #velshi https://www.msnbc.com/ali-velshi/watch/velshi-nyc-food-delivery-workers-need-to-be-paid-fairly-187277381807
Velshi: NYC food delivery workers need to be paid fairly

The federal minimum wage is unlivable, especially in an expensive metropolis like New York City. Food delivery app couriers don’t even make the state’s minimum wage of $15 per hour currently, and the multi-million dollar companies they work for are pursuing legal action to ensure they won’t reach that point. Ali Velshi explains why it is necessary these couriers who were once deemed essential, get paid fairly.

People like it when things make sense.

It’s a part of the human condition. When you have to wake up, defecate, consume, hunt, clean, reproduce, and sleep again, logic gradually becomes an addiction. Without logic, why would you have to do any—or all—of those things?
