I'm not a dev and, even if I'm a map geek, I'm a GIS noob as well - so I might not help much with your problem.
However, I'm extremely interested by such project as I've been willing to create something along that line for more than a decade (but never really got real).
So all I can do is offering some of my time / good will in case you need any.

I checked the .mp4 video animatioon on the NASA website and download it. It doesn't play anywhere either. Seems corrupted. (even Handbrake won't eat it!) so I'm curious how you went around that in the first place :)
But the animation from NASA is mind blowing already.

@jeremy il peut certes y avoir des gens chez qui ça crée des comportements à risque - via une sorte d'addiction. Mais comme le dit l'article, cela arrive dans ce genre d'activités, Strava ou pas.
Perso, je préfère y voir une fantastique opportunité de gamifier les activités physiques via des 'add-ons' comme https://squadrats.com/ ou https://statshunters.com/
