We are a grassroots collaborative research project investigating the roles and types of dogs, wolves and horses in Viking and Medieval human societies in Ireland and Britain, c.700 - 1400 AD.

We are working with 3 #KennelPacks (aka secondary schools) so far, providing unique engagement and bts on research and what we do.

Please #JoinThePack and give us a follow, toot and boost our posts. See our website for further information www.vikingdublindogs.ie #AWOOOOO

"They (the Irish) are not without wolves and greyhounds to hunt them, bigger of bone and limb than a colt"

Due to their popularity many were exported to European royal houses leading Oliver Cromwell to outlaw their export in 1652 to ensure control of the Irish wolf population.

Day 17 of #Museum30 is #Origin

The #origin of the Irish wolfhound's name comes from their use to hunt & kill wolves, rather than their appearance

In his 1571 Historie of Ireland Edmund Campion describes them being used for hunting the wolves on the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. #VikingDublinDogs

Day 16 of #Museum30 is #Break

Here is a comparison of 2 dog humerus bones - one normal (left) & a healed #break (right) mid shaft

The dog would have been cared for, for this to heal, showing it must have been a pet. The poor dog would have walked with a limp for life afterwards.

Day 15 of #Museum30 is #Page

A nice way to spend an evening is to flick through the pages of a medieval manuscript on the British Library website - plenty of #wolves & #dogs to find!!

This is a wolf sneaking up on sheep - see it & other examples at britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/digitisedmanus…

Day 14 of #Museum30 is #Winter

In #winter the excavation part of our project slows down as archaeologists & scientists retreat to the warmth of the office & lab πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

Luckily there's PLENTY of bone samples to keep us busy!

Day 13 of #Museum30 is #BestMoment

The #BestMoment of any day is starting a new bone assemblage πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ¦΄πŸ¦΄πŸ¦΄πŸ¦΄πŸ¦΄πŸ¦΄πŸ¦΄πŸ¦΄

Early morning at work at my desk, and found this rather large partial radius of a large type dog … or canid at any rate. From the hinterland of Co. Dublin, Ireland. Measurements recorded and added to the #VikingDublinDogs database. #dogs #JoinThePack #Irisharchaeology #zooarch

Over the course of the XX days, we going on a walk through time to Medieval period & see what dogs’ roles were & how dogs live in human societies.

This will be a long 🧡 over many days and evenings as we go 😁 there are a lot of πŸ• of all sorts and types.

#JoinThePack and get those treats!
