This had been a strange day for Midna.

She should have expected it when A-Ninetales came to revisit her. After all, he did not cause a snowy day like before. He also did not appear in his usual massive form, towering over her home like it was some toy. She should have realized something was up then, that he was planning something.

In retrospect, she ought to have pondered that request to visit the recently formed crater more carefully.

“Come on,” A-Ninetales said. He lay on top of her head, bearing a broad grin on his pale blue muzzle. The furry crest on his head, much like his nine tails, flowed like misty frost. “You enjoy this, don’t you?”

Midna frowned, with her eyelids low. She had little interest in games, particularly those that could lead to damage. It was so disorganized, chaotic, and downright silly. That she had to clean up after her siblings when her parents were not home made it worse. She thought she was done with such childish things.

At least until A-Ninetales came into her life, bringing snow a week before it should.

“Uh-huh,” Midna said with half-hearted enthusiasm.

Earlier in the day, A-Ninetales took her to a crater from a meteor that struck the previous night. At the bottom lay a glowing azure stone, just as azure as the rings on her body. It contrasted with her shortish black fur and her red eyes. With A-Ninetales encouragement, she went down the crater and touched the meteorite.

As a result, Midna the Shiny Umbreon now walked through the surrounding forest, taller than the trees.

“I know you love this,” A-Ninetales insisted. His sea blue eyes shone in the sunlight, just as bright as his expression. “After all, you’re still big.”

“It’s just more practical to walk back home in this state.” Midna huffed. While she could not prove it, she suspected that A-Ninetales knew what that meteorite would do in advance. Perhaps he touched it and detected its energy, causing him to share it with her. “Meanwhile, you view it like some sort of game.”

“Of course. It’s lots of fun.” A-Ninetales snickered and wagged his tails, with them looking as though they melted together around the base. “Going around the landscape, growing bigger with every step. Meanwhile, everyone is in awe of you—”

“And leaving pawprints that are larger than the last,” Midna grumbled. “Seriously, that stunt is not good at all.”

“I never heard any complaints about that.” A-Ninetales rubbed his green bandana, which carried a winged badge with a lime-green A at the center. “I only heard compliments about it.”

“You only hear what you want to hear. Sheesh.” Midna shook her head, careful not to knock A-Ninetales off.

“Oh, I don’t know. I’m hearing a lot of complaints now, with you and—”
