I have long had problems with YT's use of compression on audio. I spend hours recording and mixing (I master to -14 LUFS, which is supposedly YT's standard), only to have their playback really affect my song. As to ad volume vs video volume, I can't say because I use good ad blockers and don't see any except for those built in to the video itself as part of the script, and I always skip those.
