Embedded software developer.

Outraged by events in the USA and elsewhere, so the occasional political comment may sneak in.

@nuintari @rfcs our last IT manager was like "great, now I need to learn IPv6" when I told him we had customers demanding IPv6 support.

His replacement said "no plans" on the office network.

Since then our largest cellular network operator has issued a statement that IPv4 is a second class citizen from 1st July 2026. They have supported v6 since 2016, so it isn't exactly new.

We do IoT devices. Good thing I WFH and have a real network, or I'd be stuffed.

It's just crazy.

I'm not using any LLM or "AI" for anything that I write or draw. Never had, and never will.

I'm making this choice because:

• This technology was built by unethically stealing the hard work of millions without any consent or compensation.

• This technology has and is still constantly scraping data, including personal data, from people without their knowledge or consent, in complete disregard of the privacy laws we have to protect us.

• This technology unnecessarily uses vast amounts of energy in a world where using more energy sadly usually means more pollution.

• This technology is working on devaluating labor in order to enrich even more the already rich, aggravating poverty everywhere.

• This technology is misleadingly being sold as a solution to problems it cannot solve.

• This technology is supercharging disinformation and manipulation online, centralizing an incredible power of influence in the hands of a few controlling billionaires.

• This technology is increasingly being used by authoritarian governments in order to surveil and control the people.

• This technology atrophies our creativity and capability to think, as well as harming our social relationships.

• This technology makes my writing voice feel flat and boring. I'd rather learn to live with my human tipos.

• This technology...

What a great story.

Scammers accessed Age pensioner Ian Williams’ debit card details & withdrew $1,338, which is 5.5% of his annual income. He provided proof to his bank (NAB) but they did not accept responsibility or refund his money.

So he sued the bank - on his own, without legal representation - for 5.5% of their annual profit. That’s $379,005,000.

The bank did not respond to the case. He won.

On appeal to the Supreme Court the case was dismissed on technicalities & Mr Williams ordered to pay the bank’s legal costs.

Only after the story was widely publicised did the bank do what they should have done from the start: refund Mr Williams’ $1,338 & offer him an apology. They also waived their claim to costs.

Dragged kicking & screaming to basic ethical business practice. It’s a good look, NAB. We see you.

Ian's bank blamed him when he was scammed. He sued for $379m

Ian Williams has brought a whole new meaning to "taking on the big guy". When scammers stole from the pensioner the bank blamed him. So he launched a $379 million lawsuit to "make it right".

@Pepijn check AliExpress, I have one that cost around USD120, can cut thin plywood and MDF up to about 300 X 300 mm. Seven watt laser.

Its only real issue is that it is USB virtual com port connected i.e. not network connected. You can get Wi-Fi connected at higher cost.

@peturdainn that sucks.
@grahamperrin @bart @txt_file @kde I'm not. I simply responded to your message, where you picked one sentence and responded to it like I had said KDE had made a bad choice, when in fact I was saying I would stop using KDE if they made that choice.
Been using KDE for a very long time on Linux and FreeBSD and don't wish to change.

@bart @txt_file that's fine for you.

Others use KDE on different distros/OSs such as BSD, where systemd is not present.

I personally use KDE on FreeBSD 15. SDDM works, but if it gains a systemd dependency I can still use startx and skip the whole issue. Which I do

But if KDE decides to depend on systemd then I'm out, with no other choice but to use a different DE.

I will not switch from BSD to linux just because KDE made a silly design choice. Yes, that's my silly choice.

@dancingtreefrog ok, that's good. Pity it takes so long, but I guess it will do what you need. Hopefully you don't need to do it too often...
