Yellow is FDP, liberal / centrists
Red is SPD and Linke
SPD are social-democrats, center-left
Linke are leftwing, mix of social-democrats angry at SPD for forgetting the 'left' part of 'center-left' and everything on the left without its own party.

If you are into flamewars and 'highest Like/Fave/whatever count wins' then Mastodon probably has some counter productive design decisions.
If you consider above goals to be toxic, Mastodon is pretty great.
