@benjaminbuse Icecubes hands down.
#referendum Sadly an expensive exercise to remind anyone who’d forgotten #Australia’s true colours
The referendum did not divide this country: it exposed it. Now the racism and ignorance must be urgently addressed

My heart is broken. But that so many white people finally saw and acknowledged our country’s racism, is one of the few positives to emerge from this damaging process

@Godfrey642 @windhorse right on the money! Just makes me so exasperated by the lack of self awareness. 😳

Just watching David Speers and the panel talking about the Voice result. The racism and the kick in the stomach to our First Nations who have been wiped out over 200yrs to a minority of just 3%

And so now they've turned to Hamas-Israeli war and are talking about the atrocities, attacks and deaths over this past week in ethnic groups (Palastinians and Jews) who've suffered bc of racism. Horrific attacks on innocent ppl across decades/ centuries.

You can't help wondering about the parallels and sympathies (or not) with First Nations being attacked and killed here since colonisation.

You can't help wondering why empathy is there for some, but not all.

A few notes for overseas observers of Australia's fucked-up referendum:

1. The purpose was to establish a First Nations advisory body to the Federal Parliament. This had nothing to do with citizenship, or equal rights, or any of the other crap half-informed people seem to think was involved.

2. We needed a referendum to include the proposed body in the federal Constitution. The Constitution can only be amended via a referendum.

3. We needed to include the body in the Constitution because that would have protected it from being abolished by the next right-wing government without another referendum. Previous efforts to elevate First Nations control of First Nations issues have routinely been abolished by right-wing governments.

4. The sheer volume of disinformation has been as depressing as fuck.

5. Yes, there's racism throughout all of this. Also extreme ignorance, some of it wilful.

With the loss of the #VoicetoParliament #referendum, Australia has had its Brexit moment, where conservatives and imperialists have hijacked and corrupted the democratic political process. It will take years to uncover the myriad of lies, but ultimately history will not be kind to the selfish and mean-spirited. A sad day. #AusPol
What a disgraceful result and sadly reflects the ignorance, denial, deep seated #racism and #prejudice our country continues to suffer from. I’m sorry the majority of Australia couldn’t find it in their hearts to walk together with our First Nations people with this generous & modest #voice proposal. Shame on you Australia. The truth telling of this #referendum is plain to see. What an embarrassing moment in our history. 😥#VoicetoParliament #referendum2023 #ulurustatementfromtheheart #thevoice #auspol #yes23 #racism #ignorance #VoiceTreatyTruth #reconciliation #voteyes
Gough Whitlam + Vincent Lingiari 1975
Paul Keating + Redfern Speech 1992
Kevin Rudd + The Apology 2008
Anthony Albanese + Voice to Parliament 2023
The #LNP have either been conspicuous by their absence or vehemently opposed to reconciling and recognition. Shame on them.#VoicetoParliament #yes23 #auspol #LNP And sadly we as a nation have proven to the world that many ( and far more than perhaps many had ever imagined) are ignorant and happy to be so or racist or both. 😔😕
Rejecting the voice shows Australia is still in denial, its history of forgetting a festering wrong

The referendum became by proxy a vote on Indigenous peoples’ right to exist in our own land. Imagine – just try – how that feels today
