We went over to my grandparents to help unload hay, but showed up a little early. When life gives you 20 minutes and horses, you spend that time with the horses.

What can I say about The Milk Carton Kids? Their reputation precedes them and yet, catching them for the first time, I was struck with just how damn relaxed and funny the pair is on stage.

I wouldn’t have called myself a fan of the band before the show. I had just some familiarity with their greatest hits. Now I reckon I am. This was the most enjoyable set of songs I didn’t know a word of in recent memory.

I really should encourage my partner to pick shows more often. I doubt we’ll miss an appearance by TMCK in Northeast Ohio ever again if we can help it.

Charlie was touring support for The Milk Carton Kids on their latest pass through Cleveland. He plays an earnest and upbeat form of indie rock reminiscent of The Rocket Summer and Phoebe Bridgers, the latter having signed him to her label.

After his set, he joined The Milk Carton Kids for their encore where the trio played "Nikita," an unreleased original that the headliners will feature on. I have a full HD recording of that performance on my YouTube channel.

I saw Tom open for The Milk Carton Kids last month. He's a fellow Northeast Ohioan whose performance was, perhaps, the best surprise of the night. His brand of American / folk music is exactly what I've been looking for.

He played a handful of songs that don't appear to be released yet. I hope someday they are and I hope to catch him play again soon.

Mansfield, OH - 8.31.23

It’s been a while since I’ve come out this way. My friend Erik was in town, so we met at Phoenix for drinks. I got there early enough to snap a few structures I’ve wanted to capture.

Like most towns in this area of Ohio, there are many visible reminders of dried up industry circling a budding downtown district with great bars and restaurants. I’m always glad to see an old town thrive. Keep it up Mansfield!
