6. Here’s a few things NOT to do if your trainee reports experiencing hostile/exclusionary behavior in your lab:

❌ Minimize the issue
❌ Explain what the person “probably meant to say”
❌ Question the trainee’s experience of what happened
❌ Tell the trainee to toughen up because life is hard
❌ Comfort the trainee & do nothing
❌ Tell the other lab members that the trainee is “sensitive” & needs special treatment
❌ Warn other faculty that the trainee is “difficult”, destroying their reputation
