@davidmcnay @adbrora @Deeko I wondered that at first, but I think the cross of St Andrew would be more obvious, and this also looks like an enclosed circle.

@adbrora @Deeko yep, that would be my best guess, too.

I’m an illustrator and occasional writer. My PhD was on the role of landscape and memory in the British cemeteries of #ww1. I’ve written and acted as a consultant on memorial architecture relating to the Great War and interwar pilgrimage.

My #illustrations focus on the small stories of individuals that happened in the expanse of the Great Wars. Currently you can see my illustrations in a new #exhibition at Talbot House in Poperinge, Belgium.

@typejunky cheers, Nick!
@Deeko I’d have said the ‘Irish’ were either a kilted South African unit, or possibly 5th Bn. Seaforth Highlanders. There appear to be Lowland soldiers in amongst them, too, which would make 9th Div with the SA brigade a possibility.
New book! On the Street. Out next week. Wonderful cover photo by Helen Levitt. #architecture #publicspace #streetfurniture #photography
