Right now there are a lot of new eyes on Signal, and not all of them are familiar with secure messaging and its nuances. Which means there’s misinfo flying around that might drive people away from Signal and private communications. 1/

The Author's Guild is offering a "human authored" certification for books that used no generative AI in their creation:

i hereby offer up the badges I designed a year and a half ago (gift link): https://clivethompson.medium.com/warning-labels-for-ai-generated-text-fa6235481631?sk=caa26634f1c13d76f19c8750660fa935

Books written by humans are getting their own certification

The Authors Guild has launched a new project that allows authors to certify that their book was written by a human, and not generated by artificial intelligence.

Now that Apple has "intelligence," it's constantly presenting suggested replies to text messages, faster than the speed of thought. They are a marvel of fatuity. It's like having a weird child, or perhaps a Tourette sufferer, looking over your shoulder shouting silly yet occasionally relevant thoughts. And I can't find a way to turn that off.

Id like to put my lab servers to work archiving US federal data thats likely to get pulled - climate and biomed data seems mostly likely. The most obvious strategy to me seems like setting up mirror torrents on academictorrents. Anyone compiling a list of at-risk data yet?

edit (2025-09-21): this became https://sciop.net and its still going, in case anyone in this thread missed it

edit (2025-09-21 pt 2): do note the date on original post, nearly a year old, we have been rolling on sciop since February or so

While worthy of a chuckle, I should also like to point out that the poor and lower middle class can't afford to move. But then again, they can't say they didn't know what they were voting for...
Current trend of people searching for 'moving to New Zealand'
I think it's going to be more important than ever that #Mastodon and the #fediverse are not centrally operated out of the US unlike almost every other social media platform out there.
Ok, I'm going to avoid the socials for the next few weeks and go hide in the bunker. I'll then send a dove out over the USA and see if it gets shot to pieces... All the best to my mates over there. Thinking positive thoughts :)
As others have pointed out, a great article from Giles on the Broken Hill blackout. About time we flipped the approach to supply on it's head. Too many players in the Oz NEM worrying about the top / supply side. Time to have a look at a bottom-up approach. https://reneweconomy.com.au/broken-hill-fiasco-shows-why-we-need-to-rethink-the-grid-and-turn-it-upside-down/
Broken Hill fiasco shows why we need to rethink the grid, and turn it upside down

Broken Hill is back on the grid, ahead of schedule. It wasn’t quite Mad Max, but the outages and lack of resilience is highlighting calls for a complete rethink of the grid – starting w…
