Remember: if you get Wikipedia "pls give us money" begging, give to the Internet Archive instead.

The internet archive is perpetually underfunded, whereas Wikipedia has enough cash on hand to continue operating at twice its capacity for about 3 decades.

Editors strongly opposed the wording of the recent beg banner:

Update on the recent #winnipeg news that volunteers could face fines for clearing bike lanes on their own.

They won't, thankfully. And the whole story has highlighted how important effective snow/ice clearing is for winter cycling.

Basically, if the infrastructure is usable and safe in winter, it will be used. This is a good reminder for a car-centric, winter-y city like #winnipeg as it tries to increase active transportation use.

City won’t issue fines after snow-clearing cyclists warned

City hall isn’t considering fines against Winnipeg cyclists who clear snow and ice from bike lanes themselves, after a group received a warning for taking matters into its own hands last month.

A strange scene here in #winnipeg. Volunteers have been organizing to clear bike lanes of snow and ice. The city has asked them to stop and has raised the possibility of fines if they continue.

There's details in what constitutes a cleared lane and how recent warmer weather has affected the consistency of the snow/ice. But why would any city want to stop volunteers from doing the work for free, improving their neighbourhood for free? That doesn't make sense to me.

City to cyclists: clear bike paths, face fines

Cyclists have again taken matters into their owns hands, clearing ice from a bike lane in the Exchange District during Monday afternoon’s commute, despite a warning from the city that they may be fined.

If you ever had a vaccine, injection or surgery, you’re indebted to the ancient & wondrous horseshoe crab.

Its blue blood contains Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) which clumps at contact with bacterial toxins. Animals are caught for their blood to test sterility of medical equipment & injections.

Unfortunately the harvest is unsustainable & populations are in decline. An effective synthetic substitute has been around for 2 decades & we just need the biomedical industry to switch. #SharedPlanet

I read this New Yorker piece about #climatechange earlier today and came away from it feeling like I learned a lot and felt a lot from the experience of reading. I recommend it. I don't think it is paywalled?

But, nowhere are trains, buses, or bicycles mentioned, which surprised me, especially in such a vast piece of writing. Am I alone in that? In my head good #urbanism transportation is closely aligned with the kinds of changes responding to climate change demands.

An #Introduction.

I've never been much of a participant on social media sites before, but having heard more about the ethos of Mastodon & the fediverse as a result of all the Twitter goings-ons, I thought it might be interesting to give Mastodon a go.

I live in #Winnipeg, #Manitoba, #Canada. I work in a public #library and like #urbanism ( #strongtowns), #cats, and mystery novels.

I'm interested in the systems people create and how they affect the participants inside and the world outside.
