Of course just as I posted something banal like Thanksgiving dinner prep, I see more violence in the news. As I'm writing this there have been 605 #MassShootings (4+ people injured or killed) this year in the United States.

635 #killed
2540 #injured

The link below is an #InteractiveMap with details and at least 1 #NewsArticle about each incidentand where I got the data above.

We need to #DoBetter. The next generation deserves better. We #DeserveBetter.

Mass Shootings in 2023 | Gun Violence Archive

Gun Violence Archive (GVA) is a not for profit corporation formed in 2013 to provide free online public access to accurate information about gun-related violence in the United States. GVA will collect and check for accuracy, comprehensive information about gun-related violence in the U.S. and then post and disseminate it online.

I’m really happy that #Mastodon has a design that discourages runaway virality. Popular posts aren’t promoted. It’s not easy repost someone else’s post so it gets piled on. The closest thing to viral content is hashtags, which promote topics, not individual posts.

On the whole I think virality is a net negative. It mainly spreads incendiary, controversial, and hateful content, and encourages reactionary and hateful reactions.

Good show, Mastodon!
