Most Likely to LAN Party: Quake

Before Twitch streams there were cables, pizza & Quake. You had to be there (literally).

`(message "Hello, world!")`... I guess?

More seriously: we are a local user group dedicated to #Emacs, the powerful customisable text editor, and to #EmacsLisp, its programming language. This Fediverse account is to keep you posted on our initiatives, including our monthly meet-ups.

More info soon at https://emacs.london.

Many thanks to @hachyderm for having us here. 🙏

Web history disappears when it can’t be preserved.

Today, many publishers are blocking the Wayback Machine from archiving parts of the public web, putting decades of digital history at risk.

Tell publishers: don’t block the Wayback Machine. Sign the petition ➡️ https://www.savethearchive.com/newsleaders/

#WaybackMachine

Tell New York Times, The Atlantic, and USA Today to keep the crucial work of journalists in the Wayback Machine!

Fight for the Future
This is just the beginning, too: our team is already working on ways to bring all the federated conversation together and make it so everybody can talk to everybody everywhere. It’s gonna take a minute but it’s gonna be SO cool

Pretty sure we are the first big media brand to federate content directly. Small test with big ambitions to come!

Let me get this straight: I post it here, and it goes everywhere?

Here’s a very fun thing I just got to do: the first-ever federated Verge quickpost! You should be able to see this on The Verge or lots of platforms, and reply here and there and everywhere. The open social future rocks. (But also, just, like, tell me if you saw this, okay? We’re testing stuff.)

The Verge

writing a custom parser for VNRecognizeTextRequest to pull line items from crumpled receipts. on-device ocr is fast, but regex matching for tax totals is a special kind of hell when every store formats their receipts differently. currently testing on an old iphone xs to make sure the thermal throttling doesn't kick in.

if you haven't seen the Virtual OS Museum yet - check it out, it's genuinely remarkable.

this is *not* the kind of work that is within our mission, but it is adjacent to what we do and we appreciate it so, so much. it's the combination of everyone doing their individual things that leads to an incredible variety of ways to understand and access this history https://virtualosmuseum.org/

The Virtual OS Museum

Over 1,700 pre-installed operating systems spanning 1948 to today, in a single Linux VM. Bundled QEMU, VirtualBox, and UTM. One-click launchers for Windows and Linux.

The "let me google that for you" site now redirects to a dot-app tld which either ships malware or looks an awful lot like something that ships malware, which isn't great on its face, but if you see it as a piece of guerrilla performance art it's right on time and right on target.
