Disappointing piece on electric vehicles in the Guardian‬⁩.

Yes EVs are not zero carbon. But they are a lot better than ICE cars.

Yes cobalt is used in EVs. But increasingly cobalt-free batteries will be used & cobalt is also used in refining petrol & diesel.

More nuance, less absolutism please.

I’m glad you’ve bought an electric vehicle. But your conscience isn’t clean

First, you’ve got to drive a long way before you overcome your EV’s embedded carbon debt. And then there’s the trouble with the minerals in its battery…

@GreenFire @chrisnelder @JigarShah weather forecasts 24 hours out are getting pretty darn good, and ISOs are big drivers of that. If your balancing area is big enough, your prices aren't responding to little cloudy patches, they're responding to the macro, region wide weather. Much of it is forecastable a day ahead.

We'll always need bulk systems to be talking to the real time markets for real time load following, but we don't necessarily need millions of tiny DERs responding in that way.

@GreenFire @chrisnelder @JigarShah the "connection" can quite minimal though. It could just receive a once a day email with prices for the next day. All of the control could be handled internally, offline.

Dear @chrisnelder and @JigarShah

This episode you have made is a SERVICE TO THE WORLD.

When the business community wants an energy transition, this is the kind of thing that has happened in the past.

I can't imagine the response if something like this were to happen in our current political environment...

People literally got their lights turned off and their homes were broken into (permitted by the city) to convert them from one appliance to another.
