Retired expat living in the Philippines. My passion is photography, jazz music, good bourbon and easy living. During the pandemic, I fell in love with black and white. Once the travel restrictions were lifted I flew back to New York and traded in all my camera gear for a camera that only shoots monochrome. I’m seeing photography in a different way now., so anything posted in color is a shot taken long ago. After all, artists don’t throw away old works.

The Five Devils poster in the background refers to a French fantasy/drama. Coincidentally the five passengers could be immersed in their own devilish fantasies; oh, the drama of riding in the NYC subway, haha.

My wish is to stay always like this,
living quietly in a corner
of nature.

Everything is theater; the underground transportation system in New York always seems to offer a good show.

I realize that I don’t post every day and that by the time I’m on this platform and looking at the previous posts from followers and potential new people to follow that it’s an overwhelming task to see everything. Given that Musk wants to charge people to use twitter - I refuse the new label as much as I refuse to mention the 45th POTUS by name - I’ll probably use those 15 minutes of scrolling over there over here.

I lived in the NY for most of my life so whenever I’m back in town visiting family I spend days wandering with my camera looking for scenes of visitors busy looking for photographic memories of sights I’ve seen on a daily basis. How I wish I’d been as interested in street photography back when hookers and hoodlums filled this area and lunchtime prices went up on Matinee Wednesdays when the suburban crowds came in to watch a show. Now it’s Disney characters and naked cowboys.

The terror I felt when the planes hit the Twin Towers on 9/11 twenty two years ago was more horrific than the time I spent as a 19 year old in the jungles of Vietnam. It took me many years to return to the scenes of the crime. It took 50 years to return to Vietnam as a tourist. While I didn’t lose anyone personally in the Towers, I’ll never consider it a tourist attraction.

Boys on bicycles offering a cultural sign of some sort as they approach me on the street. In New York these days you constantly have to be ready for flight or fight. Not like it was when I was growing up.

Street photography is not just about taking snapshots of random people/objects that are around you on the street. Sometimes you just need to ask someone who’s interesting if they’re okay with me taking their picture. This tired, long suffering NY Knicks fan obliged me while wandering around Times Square area in NYC.

I am living in Manila for 12 years now and I am used to seeing security guards hanging around the concierge desk inside the mall as if someone’s gonna get an answer they don’t like and cause a ruckus. #StreetPhotography #BlackAndWhite #blackandwhitephotography #sunday #mall #people #lawandorder #manila #humancondition #streetphotographer #monochrome #story
