Fun fact: Biden has always been an old-school politician who prefers to shake hands, kiss babies, and favor the local reporters and news outlets, and this is part of why elite media has such a grudge against him -- the NYT hasn't gotten a single long sit-down interview with Biden since his election, and it makes them seethe that a local reporter in Wisconsin gets one before they do.

My take is that they're trying to clean the taint of impropriety off of that recording.
Trump paying "cash" has the immediate implication that he's trying to hide an illegal / illicit transaction.
(The mob doesn't take personal checks)
The problem they have is that Cohen immediately replies "no check" which implies that he understands what Trump meant and is guiding him to make it look legit and create a paper trail (possibly to make the contract easier to enforce)
