Applications are now open for the Richard III Society's annual £1,000 Research Bursary.
The bursary supports postgraduate research related to the later medieval and early Tudor period (c. 1399 - 1509) & can be used for expenses. Applicants do not have to be members of the Society.
#Medieval #WarsofTheRoses2 October 1452, the birth of Richard Plantagenet to Cecily Neville and Richard Duke of York at Fotheringhay Castle. He would grow up to be Richard III. In his Book of Hours, now at the Lambeth Palace Library, his birth is noted, possibly in his own hand.
For the last 3 years the Richard III Society has run an online conference for sixth formers who are studying a 15th century module as part of their History A level. This year it is 4 March and registration is still open.

On Saturday 14 Dec, members & friends gathered for a carol service at the church of St Mary and All Saints in Fotheringhay. It was, as always, a wonderful time. Some photos taken before the service started. Richard III was born in the castle nearby and his parents were buried in the church.

Wars of the Roses22 August 1485, the death of King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. His death was recorded in the Beaufort Hours, Royal MS 2A XVIII, f. 31v, owned by Margaret Beaufort.
Day two is drawing to a close. Attendees heard fascinating details on Richard’s Itinerary from 1452-1483 by Marie Barnfield, and talk via Zoom by Livia Visser-Fuchs on. Burgundian’s view of a Tournament in London. Then it was time for tours of Gloucester or Tewkesbury before back for another opportunity to buy books from the Society.
Our Triennial conference has started. First up is a talk by John Saunders on the history of the Society. Can he cover 100 years in 1 hour? We shall see!
9 April 1483 The usual date given for the death of Edward IV, elder brother of Richard III. He was ill for only a short time so his death was unexpected.. The Croyland Chronicler said "He was affected neither by old age nor by any known kind of disease which would not have seemed easy to cure in a lesser person".
