New COVID strain rises in U.S. ahead of holidays

A fast-spreading new COVID variant called JN.1 could drive a new wave of disease across the U.S. this holiday season.

Reminder: the Uvalde cops whose cowardice and stupidity got a fuckload of children killed faced basically zero consequences. At most, two officers were fired and another quit before her conduct was investigated.

These baconbacks had level 4 ballistic armor and there were over 100 officers responding to the scene, over which no one assumed command.

They should be treated like shit for the rest of their lives, everywhere they go. If you live in the same town as any of these public enemies, be sure to remind them that they are despicable.

Texas DPS won’t discipline any more officers for Uvalde shooting response

The Department of Public Safety has finished its investigation into how officers responded to Texas’ deadliest school shooting. The agency has fired one officer and is in the process of firing another.

@BetaCuck4Lyfe Stop with the thirst trap already bro.
@tchambers @[email protected] While I get the sentiment, I'm never again rooting for techbros or cryptobros to have any sort of control over social anything. So no, nostr/bluesky can die in a fire. If anyone has alternatives to AP that are also open source, community driven then sure, I hope they also succeed.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but the #fediverse does not need a dating app. Please please please do not create a dating app here at least until we fix some fairly substantive issues around trust and safety.
@sidereal Numbers are more secure anyway especially if you use the setting to do more than six which makes the box no longer reveal how many numbers by default.
@dangoodin @mmasnick Ars is part of why Elon has the reputation he has, or at least had until recently. It would be nice to see them being less the fans than they've been and more the journalists they should be (not directed at Dan). The fact that I get far more critical and informative information about SpaceX from other sources is troubling given the talent at Ars' disposal. Ars' track record on obviously bad ideas like Hyperloop were seen through by others immediately, and Starlink has no real path to success either.

Ars should just hire ESG Hound for better coverage:

@taylorlorenz Unpopular opinion but I won't miss them. Popular Science was viewed by regular people as indicative of what is possible scientifically yet it had virtually no expertise in the area and as a result spread a lot of pseudoscience. Scientific American isn't perfect but at least they try to publish articles that are feasible rather than wishcasting, and occasionally follow up on past articles when circumstances have changed or new information comes to light.

There is a place for easily digestible science news, in fact I'd argue we need a lot more of that. But PopSci wasn't filling that need responsibly and really never has.

I’ve been in the Computer Science field long enough to have seen multiple rounds of the AI hype machine. It’s always snake oil, smoke and mirrors. It never even approaches what a reasonable person would consider to be a thinking machine.

What it really turns out to be is an elaborate “pump and dump” scheme where early investors push the hype, knowing it’s all BS. Once a sufficient number of rubes jump on the bandwagon, the early investors cash out at a profit and leave the gullible behind to absorb the losses when people eventually realize that there is no value anywhere in the AI companies.

Oopsie! There went your retirement plans!

Do not be fooled by this chicanery.

There is an iconic photograph of a black man in what resembles a confederate uniform. It suggests that he was a confederate soldier. In reality, he was a slave. This misrepresentation obscures complex and often painful truths of history, replacing them with a simplified and inaccurate account.
