OK. I'm struggling to stay active on mastodon... i'm much more active on twitter. The content I enjoy interacting with isn't showing up for me here yet. :(

In periods when kids are out of school I get very depressed. My dad was abusive and being out of school meant being available to be abused/ blamed.

Today and this entire week I’ve been spiraling. He was especially abusive during the holidays. His sister committed suicide several days before Christmas, and that played a big part in him not particularly enjoying the holidays.

I’m just sick of this persistent echo that I don’t ask for showing up during December each year.

At a conference in Helsinki last year, I had a discussion with Ron Chrisley about language models. One of the things he wagered they couldn't do was mental imagery, and he used an old set of cogsci probes on mental imagery that GPT-3 failed miserably at. One of them included mental rotation, like turning a letter in your head to see what other letter it forms. Well, here's ChatGPT's first shot at it:

What letter do you get if you rotate the letter 'p' 180 degrees?

ByteDance used TikTok to track my location — and the locations of two of my colleagues — to try to find our sources. We reported on this back in October, but kept things vague to protect sources. Today ByteDance admitted it, so we can say much more:

EXCLUSIVE: TikTok Spied On Forbes Journalists

ByteDance confirmed it used TikTok to monitor journalists’ physical location using their IP addresses, as first reported by Forbes in October.

Shouldn't browsers be reading html as "application/html" instead of "text/html" since it's mostly not human readable anymore? IE: "application/javascript" is a thing. It seems like "text/plain" and "text/markdown" are really fair, but "text/html" isn't.
Anyone have a list of top shitposters on mastodon? I could use some good memes etc.
The bit about a lawyer being stopped from entering a music hall in the US because its facial recognition system picked up that she's part of a law company that's suing them is even crazier than I thought.

The law company isn't suing the music hall - it's suing a restaurant, in another state, which is owned by the hall's parent company MSG Entertainment. MSG gone ahead and harvested photos of all the lawyers in the firm and fed it to an image recognition system to ban them from every MSG Entertainment owned location.

People always tell me that if you've got nothing to hide then you've got nothing to fear. She's got nothing to hide and they still went after her.

If this doesn't start making people worried about facial recognition then there's serious trouble coming.

Now that I have a new m1 macbook pro for work, I can again inappropriately wear shorts and keep my laptop on my legs.
Always take the moral high ground.
What would be so dope: A chrome extension that makes other mastodon servers feel just like twitter... follow button, etc.
