The Santa Fe Trail 1940, C-, Blu-ray, directed by Michael Curtez, starring Errol Flynn, Jeb Stewart and George Custer go against abolitionist John Brown, yikes! Decent black and white photography and some good action/stunt work can't overcome a protagonist whose values are wrong and ignorant. Not to mention that even though the antagonist is a fanatic his values are right and history proves he's right. Flynn still charming but that can't overcome the racist idea at the heart of the film.
The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938, B+, Blu-ray, directed by William Keighley, Michael Curtiz, starring Errol Flynn, the story of the famous outlaw Golden Age Hollywood style. A visually fantastic Errol Flynn film with a simple good versus evil theme that is reminiscent of Golden age Superman taies. Flynn's charming and Basil Rathbone is a fun villain although Claude Rains is always great but he's chewing the scenery just a tad much here. The technicolor look is outstanding.
Spartacus 1960, B+, 4K, directed by Stanley Kubrick, starring Kirk Douglas, American…I mean Thracian with the most famous chin dimple in Hollywood starts a rebellion against Rome, The Romans should let the gladiators know that their leader sexually assaulted Natalie Wood when she was 16. Not my favorite epic but it's good. Kubrick does a job for hire and his personal footprint is very light here. The big four actors here Kirk is the weakest but he does sell the leadership of Spartacus well.
The Devil's Nightmare 1974, C, DVD, directed by Jean Brismee, starring Erika Blanc, tourists deal with a succubus in a Castle who kills people that are committing the seven deadly sins. Interesting story idea, good location, and okay kills can't overcome poor directing choices and mediocre acting. I'm glad I saw it though.
Blood Sabbath 1972, D, DVD, directed by Brianna Murphy, starring Anthony Geary, Dude wandering in the woods meets up with some witches who have a problem with clothes. This is basically a tits and ass movie and nothing else matters, it's garbage but I wasn't bored..Not sure if that says something bad about me.
The Manster 1959, C, DVD, directed by George Breakston, Kenneth G. Crane, an American reporter goes to Japan to interview a Japanese scientist then on the nose themes and misogyny happens. I wasn't bored but it took too long to get to the full monster design which I thought was decent, although the final transformation is unimaginative.
Hands of Steel 1986, D, DVD, directed by Sergio Martino, starring Daniel Greene. Cyborg is hunting down a scientist who holds the fate of humanity and then hides out in a bar. I don't think it's even appropriate to say this is a poor man's Terminator. It's like if somebody put a film print of the Terminator into the teleportation device from the Fly remake and also the most boring piece of garbage you can find then this film came out. Basura.
Wake Up Dead Man: Knives Out Mystery 2025, A+, streaming, directed by Rian Johnson, starring Daniel Craig, Benoit Blanc is back to solve another mystery. This was my favorite Knives Out movie. Johnson does a wonderful job making a story with a powerful viewpoint that feels completely part of the film. There's some funny parts but this is more dramatic than the other two films and it didn't bother me. Really enjoyed the themes of faith, religion, and abusive leaders, Bravo.
Films I saw in 2026.
Nestor, The Long-Eared Christmas Donkey 1977, B, Blu-ray directed by Arthur Rankin Jr/Jules Bass, starring Erik Stern, Santa Claus donkey tells the story of an ancestor who lived during the Roman Empire. This one hit me a little harder with the mother's sacrifice, a quick and good short story.
