“I have always tried to live in an ivory Tower, but a tide of shit is beating at its wall, threatening to undermine it.” —Gustave Flaubert

I consider myself the tide of shit.

I'm considering buying a bicycle for small city stuff. But I have not done that since 17 years ago.

Any advice?

«The researchers from the University of Zurich requested to not be specifically identified. Comments that reveal or speculate on their identity will be removed.»

Also good on the r/changemyview mods for having more integrity than those researchers, who feel it's okay to mess with people but now don't even want to stand for their mess with their names…

Wow, researchers at the Uni of Zürich have basically pulled the same shit as Facebook did with their emotion manipulation experiment: they let loose a group of LLM bots on r/changemyview to see if it would change people's minds. And the ethics board of the UZ didn't see any issues with that…

It's shameful how people who allegedly care for ethics could greenlight such work, and shows how research "ethics" mostly cares about following process and not what's right…

Joyful Code Review

@Prma I took the comparison to "if you actually learn the spec/how to code, you don't need 600 AI prompts"
Yesterday, I was using a slightly wrong technique to saw wood. It took me around 60 minutes to finish with a piece.
7 minutes in the morning today spent on YouTube.
And it takes me, maybe 20 minutes today, for each piece to finish.

7 minutes learning the right technique.
Hours saved.
Tiny #UK museum on anti - #trans ruling: “Speaking in a professional capacity as [a] museum of biology: this is not how biology works,” the Crab Museum’s statement read in part. “There are no binaries in nature, and biology, like all sciences, should never be taken for granted or assumed to be ‘self-explanatory.’ Even worse, it should never be used to justify weaponised culture war issues. This ruling is an abuse of #science.” 💯

“Our trans siblings must be defended at all costs.”

Honestly, when I first introduced my wife to algorithmic design, I did not expect that road to lead to manual wood working on the weekends, python dependency management and React framework.

I like how she looks at two paths, one often traveled and one less traveled. And she takes the non-road forest one. It never gets boring with her.

The EU is introducing an energy label for phones, together with mandatory requirements for phones sold in the EU;

- 5 years of software updates (AFTER they stop selling the device in the EU)

- providing important hardware parts (during sale and for 7 years after), including free software (if needed), to every repair shop, within 5-10 business days

- batteries have to make 800 charging cycles and still be above 80% original capacity

And on top of that, phones and tablets need this energy label (which also includes a fall damage durability and repairability score), and abide by the above requirements, from 20 June 2025.
