Just Stop Oil met fin à ses actions : succès ou désaveu pour le mouvement écologiste ?

L’organisation écologiste britannique Just Stop Oil a annoncé la fin de ses actions coup de poing après les nombreuses arrestations de militants, l’hostilité médiatique et une désaffection du public.

« Qu’est ce qui a plus de valeur ? L’art ou la vie ? » Le 14 octobre 2022, les images de deux activistes jetant de la soupe à la tomate sur les Tournesols de Van Gogh dans la National Gallery de Londres ont fait le tour du monde. Les médias internationaux se sont demandé qui osait s’en prendre à une œuvre d’art. Cette organisation, Just Stop Oil (JSO) a annoncé fin mars mettre un terme à ces actions coups de poing, dont le point d’orgue sera une « célébration joyeuse » le samedi 26 avril, devant le Parlement britannique.

People who support climate action are implicitly told—by their elected officials, by the fossil fuel industry, by news coverage and social media discourse—that theirs is a minority, even a fringe, view. That is not what the new research finds.

A superpower in the fight against global heating is hiding in plain sight. It turns out that the overwhelming majority of people in the world—between 80% and 89%, according to a growing number of peer-reviewed scientific studies—want their governments to take stronger climate action.

As co-founders of a nonprofit that studies news coverage of climate change, those findings surprised even us. And they are a sharp rebuttal to the Trump administration’s efforts to attack anyone who does care about the climate crisis.
