As we guessed, it seems that despite Google saying they were not making recordings of people's voices and mining them for advertisers, they were doing exactly that.
If it was a colleague caught wiretapping the workplace, we'd have them sacked and never speak to nor trust them again. In the case of Google, it's even more personal.
No Google service is free. We are the terrain they extract from. We always pay.

Wow… Google fined a whopping $68 MILLION DOLLARS for eavesdropping on people’s spoken conversations. That’ll teach them! It’s going to take Google a whole hour and a half to make that money back. I guess they won’t be pulling shit like this anymore after feeling that sort of pain. We really showed ‘em this time, eh?
Correction: it’s not even a fine; it’s a settlement with no admission of wrongdoing. So even worse.
Rule of thumb: End-to-end encryption is meaningless unless you know and control exactly who the ends are. (Let’s call this the Waltz principle.)
Same goes unless the context your encrypted messenger is running in is secure. Signal can encrypt your messages all day long but you’re still screwed if the custom keyboard app you installed on your phone is sending them off to someone else before they even reach Signal. https://mas.to/@nemo/115977538504295603 https://mas.to/@nemo/115977538504295603
Signal President Meredith Whittaker warns AI agents embedded in OSes are eroding end-to-end encryption's real-world security, despite its mathematical soundness. With root-like access to messages & data, they bypass E2EE isolation—urgent rethink needed! 🔒🤖❌

VSCode Roo Code in architect mode wants to switch to code :)
Human architect tend to avoid that ;)
