I'm really loving how Mastodon has become a refuge for all the grizzled seafarers on the ocean of the internet. They pop up in my feed and their bios all say something like

"I've been online for longer than the internet. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. 56k modems on fire in the light of Usenet. I watched IRC forks glitter in the dark near the Gateway 3000. All those moments will be lost in slop, like tears in rain. Time to deshittify."

@moonrabbit finding AI me without a modicum of facial hair turned out to be darned hard!

I eventually tried searching on my AI military career, thinking that would give me a better shot. Lots of clean-shaven dudes in military styles that leaned heavily toward, er, yeah, WWII ish. IRL name is stereotypically of a Northern Europe sound so we can all guess where that went. It was darker than I was prepared for. Yikes. And ick.

I got to thinking about the concept of just what is reality.

I asked AI for images of myself (my IRL name is relatively uncommon) to check in on who I am. Turns out I’m a rugged-looking white guy in his late 50s (thus the new avatar).

Some is right-ish, some oh-so-wrong. But I’m rocking it for a while to keep AI feeling good about itself.
