A great behind the scenes look at all the effort that goes into building an accessible Shopify theme by @NicMakesStuff

There's also a nice bit in there about how #WebComponents are a great fit for a one-time purchase theme that you support forever because "their extensibility is unmatched" and "they never need to be updated".

We launched our first Shopify theme - Nic Chan

This theme is the reason why I've disappeared from the internet for the past half a year.

I'm probably setting some bridges on fire by posting this, but it really does not lend confidence that the IAAP website portal field inputs 1. do not have a persistently visual label 2. have a much smaller clickable region than the borders imply.

You can click within the white bordered input (with terrible contrast might I add), and not find the input, you have to click on the tiny invisible box within the box to trigger the input.

And this is who determines who is an accessibility expert.

"Truth matters. Documentation matters. Fighting corruption matters. That accountability seems out of reach right now doesn’t change that. When we internalize the belief that nothing can change, we stop demanding change. When we accept corruption as normal, we stop fighting it. When we dismiss documentation of wrongdoing as pointless, we give wrongdoers exactly what they want: permission to continue unchecked and with no record of their actions."

It matters. I care.

When we throw up our hands and say none of it matters, we're doing the fascists’ work for them. They don't need to hide their corruption if they can convince us it's pointless to look. They don't need to silence truth-tellers if we've already decided truth is meaningless.

The data consultancy that isn't going to try and sell you AI projects. Crazy, right?

Finally have some free time to start moving away from a Gmail email address. Can anybody recommend a fully hosted email service provider?

I can pay.

Something like Fastmail, with the ability for aliases, and a clean, HTML, designed interface that isn't trying to be an app in a browser? But the ability to view messages as plain text.

Proton Mail is a no go because their LLMs poke all through your messages. I want something without AI bullshit.

I'd use Fastmail but they don't work with my VOIP mobile numbers and constantly engage in union busting so want something else.

Open letter to the IAAP - International Association of Accessibility… | Rian Rietveld | 10 comments

Open letter to the IAAP - International Association of Accessibility Professionals Hi Certification Team I have decided not to renew my CPWA certification. The latest 3 years all my a11y work, study and presentations were paid for or were sponsored. I wrote extended and freely available information for the Dutch government about form accessibility and WCAG, did presentations, consultancy and mentorship for Level Level and rejoined the WordPress Accessibility Team to work on documentation. All work this is paid for or sponsored. Next to all that accessibility work I had little time nor the energy to gather CAEC in my free time. There’s life outside work :-) What I want to say is: I’m really good at accessibility and work hard to share and keep my knowledge up to date. All my writing and my presentations are publicly available for free. But I was lucky to find people that wanted to pay for that. Not being able to update my CPWA despite all this work, for me is heartbreaking.  Like I’m not qualified as an accessibility expert anymore. Please consider removing the requirement that publicly available, but paid work, doesn’t count for CAECs in the future. For the next generation a11y experts. Wish you all the best. Kind regards, Rian Rietveld | 10 comments on LinkedIn
