On September 6, 1870, Louisa Ann Swain was walking past a polling place in Laramie, Wyoming on her way to buy yeast when election officials invited her to come in and vote. She became the first woman in the United States to cast a ballot in a general election. A Laramie newspaper described her as "a gentle white-haired housewife, Quakerish in appearance."
