The Biden - Trump "Debate" "Reveals our Surreal Situation. Performance Matters More than Being a Criminal" Ruth Ben Ghiat is so right: this is not a sign of a healthy democracy. A "Debate" That Reveals our Surreal Situation. Performance Matters More than Being a Criminal

Creeping authoritarianism and an addiction to strongman glamour are degrading our democracy. Performance on stage matters more than being a criminal.

Absolutely rotten. Worse than I can remember in my lifetime. And I really wish politicians and journalists would stop referring to this as 'sleaze' - this is corruption.

@Naomi_Fowler @TJ1001 And I object to this constant refrain that taxes are bad. Sunak was just awful about this in the debate. Private medicine isn’t cheap. Nor is private social care, nor support for the elderly and the disabled. Good, fair, law enforcement isn’t either. The list goes on. But this disingenuous appeal to “lower taxes” is so seductive, as if voters were the beneficiaries, when the reality is very different.
