Those of us on Mastodon chose this space because we rejected algorithmic manipulation.

Chronological feeds. No black-box recommendation engines. No throttled reach designed to sell us ads.

But most creators still need Instagram, YouTube, TikTok β€” that's where the mass audience is. So the cold start problem is still our reality when we publish there.

When you publish on Instagram, the algorithm shows your post to ~5-10% of your followers first.

If that tiny sample engages fast β†’ more distribution.

If they don't β†’ post is buried. Forever.
An account with 500 followers gets a sample of 25 people.

An account with 100K followers gets 5,000.

Same engagement rate. Completely different outcomes.

That's the cold start problem.

Let's talk about something the creator economy never admits openly:

Instagram's algorithm is structurally designed to make small creators invisible β€” not because their content is bad, but because the math of early engagement velocity is rigged toward accounts that already have large audiences.

This thread breaks down why, and what actually fixes it.
