An interesting experience I was glad to have. An impressive feat of design. A lot of cool ideas.
But the hyperbole is just that. My life is unchanged. I am not now afraid of the dark. I have not been driven insane. And it was a surprisingly easy, if not straightforward, read.
But I failed at the most key aspect of the experience - being seen reading the book. Because the cult around HoL is more about in-group performance than the book itself.
But the horrors of artillery only begins there.
Grape shot and canister shot - lots of tiny cannon balls fired at once. Like a big shotgun!
Chainshot - two pieces of shot linked by a chain. Good for ripping apart ships...and people!
Red Hot Shot - super heated cannon balls! Ouch!
And sometimes...you just shove a bunch of random shit in there. Glass. Nails. Bits of metal. Whatever you've got on hand.
Typical cannon balls did not explode. They skipped across the ground, destroying everything in their path. And that's much worse.
