#EnvironmentaEducation thought for today..💭

A crammed-curriculum means teachers & learners focus on retaining knowledge to get through assessments. It is a challenge to build in time for project-based learning & to create #changemakers. But if you do, you won't regret it 🙌🏾🙌🏼🙌🏽

Peak smallholding.... homemade cider with homemade blackcurrant cordial.
My student drink of cider & black is reborn, it's delicious and just cost pennies (approx 5p per 1/2 pint for a little sugar and the energy needed to make the cordial) 😋
Okay, I've joined #ProjectMushroom and have a new Mastodon handle... just need to work out how to link accounts 🤔

The ABCs of #climate change by the journalist who put the Sixth Extinction on the map: "Climate change isn’t a problem that can be solved by summoning the “will.” It isn’t a problem that can be “fixed” or “conquered,” though these words are often used. It isn’t going to have a happy ending, or a win-win ending, or, on a human timescale, any ending at all. Whatever we might want to believe about our future, there are limits, and we are up against them." @elizkolbert https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/11/28/climate-change-from-a-to-z/amp

@muddyboots135 There is much great work going on in climate & sustainability education which should be celebrated... it can, and will, make a difference 😊

Yes, it's being led by Reading. It's a good initiative focusing on the causes, effects and mitigation of climate change (https://www.reading.ac.uk/planet/climate-education/climate-education-plan). There are currently two bills going through Parliament & the House of Lords which might just get it launched in schools.
However, without a plan to phase out fossil fuels the future for young people is going to be very challenging. ~2.7⁰C warming by the time my Y5s reach old age 😥
Climate Education Action Plan

At the University of Reading, we're working in partnership to launch an action plan to improve climate education in schools.

My 3 appraisal targets are linked to climate & sustainability education. Bizarre considering the terms aren't in my job spec or even in the Sci curriculum for KS2-3.
We must prepare children for the future, even if it's by stealth!

"The 1.5C target is not a threshold beyond which hope also dies. Every fraction of a degree means an increase in human suffering and must therefore be fought for. How? With everything we have, to tear down the barrier between us and climate stability: the fossil fuel industry."

The 1.5C climate goal died at Cop27 – but hope must not

Every fraction of a degree increases human suffering, so the fight to end the fossil fuel industry must ramp up

@Ahkns indeed! Might just be more #BlahBlahBlah from politicians and negotiators. #LossAndDamage is vital but my personal focus is on safeguarding the future for young people. The well-kicked can on phasing out #FossilFuels is now in the long grass... but it is critical for children. COP28, COP29, COP30 or COP100 are all too late to keep 1.5⁰C alive.
