Living out my life on a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. One of 2 accounts, my other handle is @MarkusWagner .
@jochta Did you ever watch this one on frames of reference? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJMYoj4hHqU Our physics teacher showed this to us in year 10 and I thought it was quite brilliant even though now it's probably a bit dated.

@annettedittert Welcome over here Frau Dittert. It's a slightly different culture over here, in many ways better. Please note there is no full text search of posts and if you post on specific topics and want your posts to be found by others hashtags come in handy. A bit like on early twitter. There are some other differences too.
@jochta Thanks. Will do our best, doing some walks and looking at some nice gardens over there.
@jochta Yes all good. Off to USA tomorrow 😎 Nadine won the Gardeners World Magazine Garden of the Year competition last year and the prize was a trip to South Carolina. Glad you enjoy the teaching. Bumped into a CEH ex-colleague a few d ago who is now a teacher. Didn't know he had left because with hybrid working it is not so unusual now to not see someone at work for months. I occasionally practice with Mike & Tony at Vikings on Sun mornings but not missing league games / late-night finishes.
@jochta Hope all is going well John. Good to see posts from you on here now about astronomy and occasionally table tennis. Why am I not surprised you chose a 'universe'-themed server to set up your profile.
@lawilson @jayrosen_nyu
Didn't think of that, but you're right that could play a role. I occasionally 'liked' posts cropping up in my timeline from people I did not follow if I liked the post but simultaneously marked the tweet as 'not interesting', hoping to cancel the like in an effort to see less content in the future from accounts I did not follow. I wonder what the algorithm made of that. Agree with you about how much nicer it is to once again just genuinely 'like' a post.
@jayrosen_nyu @memonick@mastodon. Apologies for barging into your conversation. My guess would be algorithms on twitter causing this difference at least partly, pushing content that is likely to keep people logged on at the expense of most other content. Hard to imagine that people over here are a hundred times more motivated to engage. Might be worth asking ex-Twitter staff or other experts.
@eamonn_kerins Thanks for this thread, very interesting. The odds for other technological civilizations hanging around in the galactic neighbourhood at the same time as we do may be very low, but it can't do any harm looking for them in a more targeted way, given that resources for doing so are limited.
@sianberry Can't someone let Green Molly know how much nicer it is here? She has (at least temporarily) been taking a step back from posting 'over there' but she hasn't set up shop here (I think).
One of many newcomers from the twitter exodus. I am an ecologist & have also started another profile (linked to in this profile) to cater for my botanical and academic ecological interests. This profile is simply as a politically interested individual, to learn from and meaningfully interact with others. My first impression of here is very positive as a place not shaped by corporate interests but designed to foster conversation. But there's lots more to learn about things on here. #introduction
