Over the last two years, I have been sharing videos of impromptu piano improvisations, played while wearing hearing protection due to hyperacusis - recorded wherever a piano happened to be available.
Friends’ homes, relatives’ houses, airports - across the UK, Hong Kong, Iceland, Hungary...Without a piano of my own, these moments had to be taken as they came, often quickly, without preparation, and without the possibility of return.
Some who saw these pieces as videos encouraged me to release the audio. Since I had never released anything in this spontaneous form before, it felt like an interesting thing to try. This collection follows that idea: letting the recordings stand, with all their fragility and environmental imperfections intact.
The individual captures remain largely unedited, but have been selected for their shared themes and characteristics from a larger group and brought into a continuous 53-minute experience. In listening back, I found threads running through these moments, shaping them into a kind of eccentric narrative.
Moment’s Notice is, in that sense, both a limitation and a method.
There are be plans to perhaps "properly" record more composed piano pieces in the future - but for now, this is offered as a free / pay-what-you-want download. :-)

I have created a new piece:

(I didn’t share this very convincingly before, nor at a reasonable hour. Hope some of you enjoy…🖤)

I felt to share the first ever video I ever made - for the track ‘Solanoid’ (in 2013.) A song to the inscape of various objects I love, especially turbines and pylons. Video-wise I would do many things differently now (and still don’t really know how to make videos) - but the track itself [from the album ‘Flesh’] is one of those I’m most happy with. It is also always a joy to film endless electric pylons.

As Jeremy the man behind it and Bag of Holding told me, "It’s not an album; it’s a black box recording of a soul crossing the X-axis of space and the Y-axis of time." Which makes total sense when you hear it. There's a lot of surface noise in the data, as if hidden information untranscribably by current technology is passing through. Also it's got a good beat. #newmusic #bandcampfriday #antiqueanimal #bagofholding

Because of the excellent mix just released by @eko_, I was reminded of the existence of this collaborative track with Brian Eno. 👀
I've shared it before I think, but if anyone wants it who has connected with me more recently, here it is:

[Background: It was made in 2007, and recorded at a friend's studio. Brian Eno came in to join some soundtrack work, but instead proclaimed "I don't believe in soundtracks" - and began creating something else with me. The honest ridiculous truth is that that friend and I then did that soundtrack, and I felt it impolite to ask about the recording - and then assumed it had been lost or something. Years went by.
But then in 2019 a label approached my friend and I to do a vinyl release of soundtrack work from that period. That fell through (like most things), but as part of it / as part of getting sessions from that period - for me to master - I also got the project. 😄
We actually made about half an hour's worth of music, which Mr. Eno said we should put out at the time, but only this portion felt worth sharing.]
Here's the fantastic mix Eko did that re-alerted the above to my mind:

1 track album
“Silence is the test for the soul to retrieve the ends of beautiful memories. Silence is the power of clarity—everything is visible in the form of inner perception in the face of stillness. Life inside of us roars in the face of silence. The stillness we feel is the evidence that we are alive and full of hope for growth and revival.”
