There's no one right way to use Mastodon. I use it a lot like I did Twitter, a kind of RSS feed. I followed friends, scanned the Local timeline for interesting stuff, and when someone boosted an interesting thing, I'd check out the account and maybe follow that one.
There's also "groups", like @plants and @litstudies. These are automated accounts that boost the posts they're tagged in, like a subscription.
Following hashtags, like #CatsOfMastodon is new, and delightful.
